"Avalanche, would you share my last pursuit?" (Baudelaire)
'It is this silence that frightens me - the silence-' The Consul read this sentence over and over again, the same sentence, the same letter, all of the letters vain as those arriving on shipboard in port for one lost at sea, because he found some difficuly in focusing, the words kept blurring and dissembling, hisown name starting out at him : but the mescal had brought him in touch with his situation again to the extent that he did not now need to comprehend any meaning in the words beyond their abject confirmation of his own lostness, his own fruitless selfish ruin, now perhaps finally self-imposed, his brain, before this cruelly disregarded evidence of what heartbreak he had caused her, at an agonized standstill. But the bell rings, and I must get off the track and let the cars go by; —
What's the railroad to me? I never go to see Where it ends. It fills a few hollows, And makes banks for the swallows, It sets the sand a-blowing, And the blackberries a-growing,
but I cross it like a cart-path in the woods. I will not have my eyes put out and my ears spoiled by its smoke and steam and hissing. ("Sounds" Walden)

YERVANT DER PARTHOGH: 47.11 - Feeding Mia Farrow APOTHEKE 13 - 20 ΙΟΥΛΙΟΥ 2009
Τον Νοέμβριο θα παρουσιαστεί από την APOTHEKE η βίντεο-εγκτασταση "Around The Silence" ενω ετοιμάζεται και το βιβλίο φωτογραφιών του με τίτλο "Walking Through Rooms And Stopping".
YERVANT DER PARTHOGH: 47.11 - Feeding Mia Farrow APOTHEKE 13 - 20 JULY 2009
The recent, radical transformation of the technologies of observing and auscultating unfolding events via media such as Youtube and blogging, differentiates the production of collective memory as well as the context and meaning of 'trauma'. A vast archive of private, local, mostly confrontational events defines today's international communality, a communality which in turn is re-privatised and appropriated accordingly. The quest-ion of belonging becomes a query regarding digital memory, the resolution and framing of images, provided the images themselves remain genealogically untraceable. Mia Farrow's recent - failed hunger strike for Darfur from Connecticut , a screaming privatization of an international issue and a shift in its dissemination as of a specific local archive, triggered Yervant Der Parthogh's visit to his own archive of problematically copyrighted filmed conflicts. A visit which immediately becomes aporetic vis-a-vis the role of the viewer-author within the broader process of redistributing parts and permits in such an archive's reconstruction. Bringing together techniques from music videos, war reportage and CCTV surveillance, Yervant Der Parthogh's 47.11 - Feeding Mia Farrow synthesizes a third archive in-between public and private, briefing and alienation, in-between copyright and cultural terrorism. 47.11 -Feeding Mia Farrow thus traces supply lines to nurture the peripeteia of the archive and its uses, supply lines unadulterated by the amassing ravingly anorexic privatizations yet not that far from our domestic t.v. sets.
'47.11 - Feeding Mia Farrow' is the first of a series of visits by Yervant Der Parthogh to archives and data banks. In November APOTHEKE will present his video-installation titled "Around The Silence", while he is also currently working on a photo-book titled "Walking Through Rooms And Stopping" which is to be published in early 2010.

Η διακωμώδηση γίνεται εμφανής μέσα από την επιλογή των τίτλων των φωτογραφιών όπως για παράδειγμα «Where Ι signal you where you go» παρμένο από την κυπριακή φράση, «πού σου νεύκω, πού πάεις» !

Orestis Lambrou: NIC
Continuing his anthropocentric, photographic research into Cyprus' architectural modernism, Orestis Lambrou's exhibition at APOTHEKE, titled NIC, find the artist invading the deserted Nicosia International Airport to photograph this quintessentially symbolic of the island's recent architectural history building. Exposing its design and decorative details, Orestis Lambrou's photographs, avoid the romanticized aesthetic clouding the airport's building and instead focus on its autonomous aesthetics as a build structure. The photographs at NIC (the IATA code name for the Nicosia International Airport) narrate on one hand the historical traces of abandonment, yet on the other they recount a climactic moment in Cyprus' attempts to formulate an architectural identity beyond local and national influences.

For his first solo exhibition under the title LOVE AT LAST SIGHT, opening on the 19th June 2009 at APOTHEKE, ConstantinosTaliotis (b.1983) begins from the end’s beginnings. Scenarios of disaster and situations at the brink of disintegration are photographically charted, narrating multiple endings, thus mocking the obsessive unerstanding of disaster as essentially apocalyptic. Instead of the imminent, grievous flattening an ending is understood to engage in, ConstantinosTaliotis rediscovers and manages, at last sight, the discontinuous game of the process of disaster itself. Instead of the ominous consumption of sobs and cries, the echo of a silenced loudspeaker, the rattle of a deserted pool-bar, a bright orange, plastic, toy-gun force the accepted tracing of the warring, the disastrous, the catastrophic to a disorderly retreat.

Nicosia is intruded by a ferocious catastrophe in February 2042. The city is deluged by an inexplicably massive quantity of sand from an unidentified source. It is covered in grey sand and dense mist. The city is evacuated and the inhabitants move to the highlands or along the coast. In the moment of this biblical destruction, a conflict, that dates back to the beginning of the century, exacerbates. Two well organized and equipped teams are in war for the aesthetic authority of the city, each one trying to impose its own architectural idiom. On the one hand, the defenders of classic architecture, often found in the walled city, seek to extend their influence outside the walls, while on the other hand the adversaries of classic homogeneity that is imposed on districts of special architectural character, demand the complete liberalization of aesthetic and city planning criteria and constrains. An urban landscape that is threatened by extinction turns to a battlefield where the architectural pluralism and polyphony is in danger.

“As many of you will know, Jen and I have been struggling to keep Salt moving since June last year when the economic downturn began to affect our press. Our three year funding ends this year: we’ve £4,000 due from Arts Council England in a final payment, but cannot apply through Grants for the Arts for further funding for Salt’s operations. Spring sales were down nearly 80% on the previous year, and despite April’s much improved trading, the past twelve months has left us with a budget deficit of over £55,000. It’s proving to be a very big hole and we’re having to take some drastic measures to save our business. Here’s how you can help us to save Salt and all our work with hundreds of authors around the world.
JUST ONE BOOK
1. Please buy just one book, right now. We don’t mind from where, you can buy it from us or from Amazon, your local shop or megastore, online or offline. If you buy just one book now, you’ll help to save Salt. Timing is absolutely everything here. We need cash now to stay afloat. If you love literature, help keep it alive. All it takes is just one book sale. Go to our online store and help us keep going.
2. Share this note on your profile. Tell your friends. If we can spread the word about our cash crisis, we can hopefully find more sales and save our literary publishing. Remember it’s just one book, that’s all it takes to save us. Please do it now.

After a calculated paroxysm he continued the domestic mastication with some dish-washing. He ought to know better and not turn a one-hour commute to a two hours and thirty-five minutes journey up north. Pretending to read the erect notes of a Herma (1961) he would listen to a bouncing golf ball being kicked around and the best-love-song-in-the-world, in all the five covers, abandoning his face as it appeared amidst a book, on a train window. Words, his sand tower sifting through elapsed fingers and reef-knotted wrists, hyphenated his walks to the glass of a bottle so familiar. With all of last year' s anxious disregard for the keyboard breakdance and the violent introduction of the aesthetics of the nip's ink, he had became that other Munch painting (1891), looking at Caillebotte's Homme au balcon (1880), who in turn shows up again in the 1895 version of The Scream, beginning his exit only in 1909 (or 1915-18, accordingly). A balustrade. Machine guns of light. Asymmetrical glissandi of windows. Whereas no one believed that the Tschumian extolment of fireworks would become anything but a manifesto and a metaphor, the moribund havoc that scorched the titanium clad TVCC not only presents itself as a more vivid image to the hermeneutics of Architecture vis a vis the current socio-economic conditions than the descriptions of the thousands of abandoned cars - keys in ignition - outside Dubai airport and under the shadow of halted bulldozers and dusted Jumeirah, it paradigmatically stands-in for all attempted redefinitions of non-mandarin (if you'd excuse me) contemporary architectural practices.
The proliferation, especially during the last decade, of FTSE and NASDAQ chart-mimicking structures, at steep angles from murky and loose ground, could have been read (they wished!) as defying gestures towards both the stereotypical views of the Middle and Far East and the blow of 9/11 to modernity's (fundamentalist) functionalism. Yet such "contributions" to the new economies that arose partly because of these buildings (think of Bilbao, dear reader) reached a morphological semicolon with Koolhaas 'critique' of the skyscraper. In program CCTV, or 'Big Underpants', the owner and mother-ship of TVCC, is for Koolhass a reificatory materialisation of his long echoing battle cry: 'Kill the Skyscraper'. The vacant center structure aspires to be not the singular height-striving, floor-stacking dry phallus which "makes Architecture impossible" [Koolhaas, S, M, L, XL, p. 1075] and who by its sprouting pastiches across the world cripples and parodies urban life. No Sir! Instead it is four - two horizontal and two vertical. And at 230 metres high CCTV is only 14 metres shorter than One Canada Square (Canary Wharf), 50 metres higher than all the pickled 180 metres of 30 St Mary Axe (The Gherkin), almost 80 metres higher than the feted Seagram and stands just a floor short of Renzo Piano's 52-floor New York Times Building. It also takes up 4 times the floor size of The Shard which once completed will be the tallest building in Europe. TVCC itself is 159 metres tall and of a shape that resembles a stock exchange's index chart more than any another building. So much for program, hey Rem?
With the disjunction of architecture from space to the stratosphere, these star-shaped hyperbolas have been relying overtly on the glittery, outer atmosphere to keep their fickle existence from their ever imminent destruction. Alongside the burst of the last silver lining of the property market came the exemplary consummation of TVCC - not least by Architecture itself. Architecture as the choreographer of situations has resisted - at last - the architecture of structures. TVCC on Monday, 9th of February 2009, became a firework itself, trespassing the threshold of professed 'contribution' and joining the ranks of a Chinese Lantern Festival for the Year of The Ox. TVCC became no longer a (future) facilitator of culture, but culture itself, in all its bombastic, formless uselessness, producing only "a delight that cannot be sold or bought, that has no exchange value and cannot be integrated in the production cycle" [Adorno IN Tschumi]. At TVCC on Monday, 9th of February 2009, Architecture found itself again at the brink of becoming spacing, a perpetual, unresolved possibility.
Staring at such a brightly illuminated sky from all these fallen stararchitects, one can only make a wish: may Architecture retain such futility and through its rupturing violence abandon all temptation for the detention of structure.
