PUBLIC WORKS

Εντός του κατακερματισμένου και δι-πολικού κέντρου της Λευκωσίας οι κληρονομιές του 20ου αιώνα και οι μεταμορφώσεις του 21ου, προκαλούν τη μοιρασμένη τούτη πόλη σε μια ενδοσκόπηση έναντι των αξιώσεων της ως παραγωγός στο διεθνές πολιτιστικό λεξιλόγιο/προσκήνιο και τα μελλοντικά αρχιτεκτονικά της βήματα. Απ' την άλλη η τέχνη, αφήνοντας πίσω την πρόκληση των συστημάτων παράγωγης γνώσης, μέσω της αισθητικής εμπειρίας αναδιπλώνεται εξω-ιδρυματικά, διαλογικά, συνομιλητικά, δημόσια. Ένα ρόλο που μπορεί να αποκτήσει η τέχνη είναι να μας προκαλέσει να σκεφτούμε τον κόσμο μας εκ νέου, να μας προκαλέσει να αναθεωρήσουμε την αίσθηση της κοινότητας μας. Πώς ανταποκρίνεται η Λευκωσία, με τις πολλαπλές και μοιρασμένες κοινότητές της σε αυτές τις εξελίξεις; Ποια είναι η ευθύνη μας ως καλλιτέχνες, πολιτιστικοί παραγωγοί, αρχιτέκτονες, ιστορικοί, θεωρητικοί στη διαμόρφωση της πόλης ως κοινότητας; Πώς χρησιμοποιούνται οι οπτικές γλώσσες και πώς θα μπορούσαν να διαμορφωθούν για να αλληλεπιδράσουν του δημόσιου, κοινού χώρου και του κοινού ως έχει;

In the bi-polar centre of Nicosia the legacies of the C20th and the transformations of the C21st are challenging this divided city to introspection, vis-a-vis its claims to an international vocabulary, however ignored, and its architectonic steps forward. Moving on from the modernist legacy of challenging systems of knowledge through aesthetic experiences, art forms have developed into the manifestations of littoral, conversational or dialogue based public art. A role that art can assume is to challenge us to think of our world anew and trigger thought on our sense of community. How does Nicosia's fragmented sense of community respond to such developments? How are we – art practitioners, cultural producers, architects, historians, theorists - responsible in shaping that community and how visual language is used to interact not only with a highly charged public space but also with the public that inhabits that space?

Public Works, will be held on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of July 2010 at APOTHEKE and across the Old Town of Nicosia.
will be divided into an afternoon of curated discussions and short presentations on the 3rd July 2010 and a more active engagement with the public space of the locale on the 1st and 2nd of Julyl, attempting to explore issues re:

*Nicosia as a space and place of conflicts.
*The public sphere and the subsequent and diverse uses of art in this specific locale.
*The public(s) that inhabits Nicosia, the degrees of its representations, and how and if art can attribute a visual voice.
*Historical and theoretical paradigms of social engagement through the arts and the importance of introducing such vocabulary into the Cypriot setting.
*Art as a contact zone for conflict resolution.

The workshops and events will also include:
* A workshop with children, aiming to reclaim and construct one of the numeorus temporary car parks in the city sprouting on evry other empty lot and transform it into an ad-hoc playground.
*A tour of stencils and graffiti and their importance as a form of visual communication and social engagement in the walled part of Nicosia by graffiti artists, taggers and activists.
*A presentation by the auotnomous left group of the history of their rich relationship with the city of Nicosia.
*A sensory challenge through a collaborative dance performance.
*A street party - a hisotrically traceable mode of public engagement with the city that has attracted multiple reactions and has partly rekindled the public interest for the Old Town of Nicosia.
*An exhibition of past and present collaborative, community-based and socio-spatially involved works at APOTHEKE.
*A radiophonic engagement with the space of the walled city

Deltiological Ephemera

Αcross its 20 square metres and on its aging, eroding walls, APOTHEKE will be hosting from Thursday 15th April to Saturday 24th April 2010, three ad hoc works by Glavkos Koumides, under the title PSEUDO-CONCEPTUAL EPHEMERA.

These works, as a series of conjectural pictographies, attempt to highlight the beaming allurement of a co-ordinated deviation from horizontality, the elation integral to an almost mystical centrifuge, as well as the futile end of all efforts to repudiate the excessive and the absurd.

Alongside these works, an arrangement of the not only philatelically significant post-cards, recently send by the artist from Cologne, where he lives and works, to 'APOTHEKE, 23 Κleanthis Christofides Street, Lefkosia 1011, ZYPERN', and which additionally kindled Glavkos Koumides' ephemeral passing through APOTHEKE, will also be exhibited.

WAYS OF EATING

CHARLOTTE JARVIS & JAMES READ
WAYS OF EATING

Ways of Eating: Performance, Εγκατάσταση, Κατανάλωση

Μέσα στο 2010 η Charlotte θα παρουσιασει projects της στο ΒAC, στο Bristol Old Vic, στο Εdinburgh Forest Fringe και ως μέρος της σειράς διαλέξεων 5 x 15 στο Λονδινο.

Ways of Eating: A performance; an installation; a consumption.

Ways of Eating, a new work by Charlotte Jarvis and James Read will be hosted over the Easter weekend (2-4 April 2010) at APOTHEKE. Ways of eating takes the form of a dinner party carried out as a durational and disintegrating installation over five hours on three consecutive nights.

The performance is a theoretical and literal consumption of John Berger's seminal text, Ways of Seeing, exploring how and why we consume art and images and what factors dictate and manipulate the form of that consumption.

Each evening eight new ‘performers’ are invited to eat at the gallery where, transformed into the exhibit, their own roles, rituals and assumptions are scrutinized by the transient audience passing by.

Each of the six courses served is a physical essay on one or more aspects of the Berger text, examining how the meaning of art and images in general is manipulated through the context in which we encounter them, the male and female gaze as played out in the form of the traditional nude and how advertising, art (and perhaps pornography) address the viewer.

Expanding from the text the form and presentation of the performance aspires to draw from and dissect Performance Theory (Peggy Phelan), Scopophilia & feminist criticism (Laura Mulvey, Grizelda Pollock, Tessa de Lauretis etc), Fluxus and Relational Aesthetics (Bourriaud).

Charlotte Jarvis has exhibited at Madder139 and The Atlantis Gallery in London, The Big Shed in Suffolk and performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and as part of the Edinburgh International Festival. Charlotte is part of the ShowFlat collective and is now studying an MA at the Royal College of Art. She will be exhibiting and performing at The Barbican, The BAC, Bristol Old Vic, Edinburgh Forest Fringe and for the 5 x 15 lecture series across London this year.

James Read is a journalist, photographer and visual technician with a fierce sense of gluttony and a desire to provoke overconsumption in others.

Charlotte and James met after a casual sexual encounter and have since been collaborating through the medium of their Art For Eating projects (www.artforeating.com).

DON'T TAKE ADVICE - TAKE RISKS!

DON'T TAKE ADVICE – TAKE RISKS!
APOTHEKE, 12 – 27 Μαρτίου 2010

Στις 12 Μαρτίου 2010 και με την ομαδική έκθεση υπό τον τίτλο DON'T TAKE ADVICE - TAKE RISKS!

Η έκθεση DON'T TAKE ADVICE - TAKE RISKS!

DON'T TAKE ADVICE – TAKE RISKS!
APOTHEKE, 12 – 27 March 2010

A group show under the title DON'T TAKE ADVICE - TAKE RISKS! opening on 12 March 2010, launches the Spring 2010 programme of APOTHEKE in Nicosia, which it includes, amongst other, the participation of APOTHEKE at the 16th edition of Art-Athina (13-16 May 2010).

DON'T TAKE ADVICE - TAKE RISKS! consisting of recent works from the APOTHEKE collection, provides at first a review of its artistic and institutional tactics up to date, while negotiating the notions of a juvenile Cypriot art-market.

Laughing in the face of the local monolithic understandings of patronage – with its basis on excess capital and social status turf wars – a group show like DON'T TAKE ADVICE - TAKE RISKS! is nonetheless both a marketing device as well as an exercise in curatorial knowledge.

At this convergence of the personal and the social, APOTHEKE turns to a network of risk-taking practises and works. From coinage offences to trespassing and public (self-)mockery, from a near-negation of material and stylistic signifiers to risqué playing with theoretical concepts, DON'T TAKE ADVICE - TAKE RISKS! showcases in these 13 artists' works a cross-section of contemporary art which lies beyond the production of ornaments or shallow political commentary, against the accumulated misery of mannerism and the often state-subsidised financial querulousness.

Artists on show include: Antonis Antoniou, Barbara Chandler, Charlotte Jarvis, Alana Kakoyiannis, Alexia Kirmitsi, Glavkos Koumides, Phanos Kyriacou, Orestis Lambrou, MCP, Akira Mushi, E. Panagiotidis, Yervant Der Parthogh, Constantinos Taliotis and Maria Toumazou.

Curated by Demetris Taliotis.

*APOTHEKE's schedule of exhibition continues with Ways of Eating a durational performance-installation by Charlotte Jarvis and James Read (2,3, and 4 April 2010), followed by a solo project by Glavkos Koumides (15-23 April 2010).

APOTHEKE also announces the opening of its e-shop @ www.apothekecontemporaryarts.com, where prints, objects, ornaments and books by artists and designers exclusive to APOTHEKE can be bought and collected. The establishment of the APOTHEKE e-shop is just another example of the commitment of APOTHEKE towards the promotion, support and networked development of contemporary art, ideas and culture of and in Cyprus.

Zaha And Futility

Of Other Spaces

"For a brief, but achingly significant period in the middle of the nineteenth century, architecture and engineering really did meet, in the sense that there was a reciprocal demand for expanding the limits of each field. New technologies led to new building types, which forced engineers to come up with new structural systems. The iron and glass palaces really were as close to that perfect moment as construction could get, but by the end of the 19th century, the capabilities of the engineers had exceeded what they could be needed for. Look at the Paris exhibition of 1889; the Eiffel Tower and the Galerie des Machines were both engineering feats that totally over-fulfilled the demands that could be made of them by society; there was no need for any building that vast, and there never really would be. In a way, this outstripping of technology is akin to ‘the fall’ of functionalism; humans are incapable of living up to this ideal synthesis of technology and design, and it can therefore only ever be a case of expressing something that cannot actually be, of ‘elegant’ (or of course, cost-effective) solutions to our inadequate problems. This fracture in the conceptual foundations of modernist architecture haunts it still. For a brief, but achingly significant period in the middle of the nineteenth century, architecture and engineering really did meet, in the sense that there was a reciprocal demand for expanding the limits of each field. Anniversary Treatise [Mozart]

After Γεώργιος (Musto) Χοιροβοσκός

"The score as a founding document of re-creation has no temporal status. It is both precedent and descendent of realization. The score always arrives after the fact, to dictate the fact. (...) A performance of the piece would not exhaust the score; it would still call for another realization and another, ad infinitum. This is another feature of the score. It is never satisfied."

Comin Thro' The Rye
By Robert Burns

O, Jenny's a' weet, poor body,
Jenny's seldom dry:
She draigl't a' her petticoatie,
Comin thro' the rye!

Comin thro' the rye, poor body,
Comin thro' the rye,
She draigl't a' her petticoatie,
Comin thro' the rye!

Gin a body meet a body
Comin thro' the rye,
Gin a body kiss a body,
Need a body cry?

Gin a body meet a body
Comin thro' the glen,
Gin a body kiss a body,
Need the warl' ken?

Gin a body meet a body
Comin thro' the grain;
Gin a body kiss a body,
The thing's a body's ain.

ARCHITECTURAL VIEWS: NEOPTOLEMOS MICHAELIDES

To 2006 σκηνοθέτησε την ταινία “Urban Nomad”.

INFO

ARCHITECTURAL VIEWS: NEOPTOLEMOS MICHAELIDES

A different aspect on Cyprus architecture is presented with the publication of "Architectural Views: Neoptolemos Michaelides”, by Orestis Lambrou. The book brings together a series of photographic impressions of selected buildings of the Cypriot architect, as those stand today.
The book will be launched on Thursday, December 17th, on the ground floor of the Demetriou Tower in Nicosia. The Demetriou Tower is one of the more widely known works of Neoptolemos Michaelides and it is soon to be renovated. In addition to the book, there will be a photography exhibition with selected prints from the book. The book will be available at a promotional price during the exhibition, while it will also be available for purchase, as a special edition that includes 3 prints.
Utilizing the camera not only to record the simplicity of lines, simple forms and the widespread use of concrete that characterizes the work of the Cypriot architect, but also to focus on the importance of these projects as part of our living built environment, Orestis Lambrou says, "Out of respect for the architect’s work, and as homage to modernist design, I find it important to draw attention to these buildings as well as to the importance of the architecture that surrounds us.”
The work of Neoptolemos Michaelides, special in its unique and effective implementation of the principles of Modernism in a Cypriot context, is a key stimulus and starting point for the photographic work of Orestis Lambrou who says, "The evident changes that buildings endure, the evolution in their use or even non-use, are as important to record as their images. Through the book’s conservational and archival qualities, and through the medium’s narrative values, I attempted an account of Michaelides’ contribution to the modern era of Cypriot architecture. Especially since the representative buildings of this era are slowly being erased from the time line of architectural history and demolished to give space to new constructions.”

Orestis Lambrou
Orestis Lambrou (1981) studied Film (BA Hons) at UCCA, Image and Communication (MA) at Goldsmiths University. In 2006 he directed the film "Urban Nomad". He participated in the group exhibition "IC Show" (2008) at the Bardgehouse Gallery in London. He is a film maker and a photographer whose interest is documenting urban spaces from an anthropocentric point of view and particularly within the Cypriot architectural identity. Through his work, both still and durational, he attempts to bring forth what is otherwise missed. In July at APOTHEKE in Nicosia, he presented a solo exhibition of photographs from the abandoned Nicosia Airport entitled NIC. He lives and works in London and Nicosia.

INFO
The exhibition opens Thursday, December 17 at 20:00 on the ground floor of the Demetriou Tower on Salaminos Avenue, and will remain open until Sunday, December 20. Opening times: 17:00 – 20:00. During the exhibition, the book will be available at the promotional price of 22 euros. Info: 99596276.

Amsterdam Biennale / Nicosia Pavilion

Amsterdam Biennale / Nicosia Pavilion
12 December 2009 - 3 January 2010
Mediamatic Bank, Vijzelstraat 68, Amsterdam [map]

APOTHEKE is taking part at the Amsterdam Biennale 2009 with a specially commissioned sound-work by Antonis Antoniou, titled Fountanes, alongside new works by Alana Kakoyiannis, Achilleas Kentonis and Maria Papacharalambous, all reflecting on the issue of water vis-a-vis Nicosia, after a text by Demetris Taliotis.

Fountanes, which means ‘water taps’ is an interactive sound installation that explores the sonic possibilities created by the manipulation and transformation of a single audio sample. Four different taps, attached horizontally onto a water tank, are the main interface between the system and the audience. By opening or closing the 4 taps, the audience directly manages the pre-programmed operations that modify the sound in specific ways, creating varying textures, timbres and rhythmic patterns. The input of the audience is an absolutely vital element for the project, since the participants actually act both as the composers and as the performers. The final outcome is therefore never the same, since it is highly dependant on the performing/compositional decisions of the participants. The audio sample is relevant to the construction; it is a recording of flowing water through the pipes underneath a sink, superimposed with a recording of a dry tap. The dry-tap recording is a usual auditory phenomenon in Cyprus (especially during the summer season), since, due to long periods of drought, water cuts are employed as a water-saving measure. The two superimposed recordings, apart from their contrast on a conceptual level, also create a sense of continuity (flowing water) with interesting rhythms (abrupt percussive sounds coming out of the dry tap).

The whole operation is controlled by a system designed on the Max/Msp software. There are 4 LEDs (light-emitting diode) attached to the very edge of each of the 4 taps. There are also 4 LDR sensors (light dependent resistor) attached to the inside of each tap. When the participant opens a tap, a proportional amount of light to passes through it and this consequently affects the voltage of the light resistor, which in turn passes this altered information to the Arduino. The Arduino is the interface between the outside world and the Max/Msp patch, where all programmed functions are found. In other words, it translates the voltage given by the LDR to data communicable to the computer. From there, the Max/Msp patch alters the audio signal in different programmed ways.

The audio output reaches the ears of the audience through 2 transducers attached to the inside surface of the tank. In this way, the signal is filtered through this object (tank) merging with its distinctive metal quality. Through this procedure, cohesion is reached between the digital world and the tangible construction.

Fear

Alive. That is the most addictive thing about rage - it makes you feel alive. You feel like you can take on the world. That for that moment you are present. You are a bully. But ultimately a coward. Fear drives me. Fear destroys me. Judgement. Perhaps writing in English gives it a more self-help feel then you would like? But it is late and thinking in Gaelic is always going to be a challenge. Chelsaea V Apoel. Should be an interesting match. Can Cypriots even be hoodies?

OH SHIT!

Alexandros Constandinou, OH SHIT!

Narcissism lays between voyeurism and surveillance. The self-portrait as artistic genre is an equally mythological pathology of our general understanding of the artist. Famously executed in frugal grandiosity it often signifies the artist's resistance towards 'still lifes' and arrested landscapes – phantasmic or realistic – and his / her attempts to instil life into art through his/ her image and liking. A precursor of the performance and body-art relic, the sui generis self-portrait does however come short from the libertarian philandering of interdisciplinarity it verges on . Transfixed at the shores of its practise it persists in making eyes to none but itself. The dissemination of image-capture technology and its tagging dispersal notwithstanding its shared position with the narcissism of the portraiture, introduces into such a genre the body. Taken at arm's length, most currently circulation self-portraits, take our eyes away from the iris, the lips, the cheekbones. Freud -or Caravaggio- might be outlining the boy Narcissus but the narcissistic body actually enters the frame as a glimpse of a camera-bearing arm, an unwitting cleavage, a dancing crotch, a surprised torso. The surveyed body replaces at the core of self-portraiture the subject-as-object. The looking glass, the peeping hole, the fleeting glance is replaced by the overseeing camera.

At the climactic cross-section of all these theoretical underpinnings comes Alexandros Constandinou's solo show at APOTHEKE, titled OH SHIT!. Part of a series of self-portraits taken over a long period of time, the photographs on show are revealed and concealed, in equal measure, behind an element of humorous surprise and an almost juvenile fascination with the body. Delving into the most closeted pronouncements of the depicted self however, OH SHIT!, co-curated by Alexandra Lund Askoldova, is an attempted reflection on the cult of the artist and its morbid grip on the work of art while at he same time being an examination of the canons of the self-portrait vis-a-vis historical and contemporary technological advances. Consequently, the photographs of Alexandros Constandinou appear to be a rewriting of the desire burdened myth of Narcissus via the folkloric Brother Grimm's mirror for a grown up, post-technological art(loving)-world.

Finally the bus arrived

When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple
with a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
and satin candles, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired
and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
and run my stick along the public railings
and make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
and pick the flowers in other people's gardens
and learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
and eat three pounds of sausages at a go
or only bread and pickles for a week
and hoard pens and pencils and beer nuts and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
and pay our rent and not swear in the street
and set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.
