MAPPLETHORPE / GENET AT APOTHEKE

Robert Mapplethorpe: Porftolio X
Jean Genet: Un chant d' amour

Robert Mapplethorpe: Porftolio X
Jean Genet: Un chant d' amour

Robert Mapllethorpe's infamous Portfolio X and Jean Genet's only film Un chant d' amour wil be on show at APOTHEKE for just four days, from the 8th to the 11th October, a first installment of APOTHEKE's international co-operation and exchange program with private collections, galleries and museums.

When asked why he had never written a political text on prison institutions, Jean Genet, writer of (homo)sexualized delinquency answered: “People told me that it was hell. I answered: I’ll turn it into a paradise”.

The blossoms of gay love bloom in jail. The sadistic jail keeper as voyeur can hardly cope, or then again, he cannot get enough. Therefore, he beats up the prisoner and then sticks a pistol in his mouth. The prisoner’s eyes, however, taste no metal but drift into a dream about a meadow, the fellow prisoner of his desires, and lust.

Un chant d ́amour (A Song of Love) (1950) is Genet’s only film, which caused a scandal and was partly forbidden until well into the 1990s. It was written during his long stay in prison and the film was made over three months in Nico Papatakis’ nightclub La Rose Rouge in Saint- Germain-des-Prés. The silent film is a desperate ode of love, which embraces the architecture of power and eroticizes repression. It celebrates an unmanageable eroticism without fleeing into the Utopia of a freed, un-alienated and ostensibly authentic sexuality.

On the contrary: Genet’s film affirms fetishism and tells of a desiring excess which knows no bounds ofstandardization and subservience, and which – despite years of ostracism as a pornographic work – does not limit itself to the logic of taboo and transgression.
Genet crisscrosses the confusion and coexistence of despair and desire, frustration and hope in a debauched, bacchanal and yet also sad and oppressive kaleidoscope of images. He achieves this with only an unadorned, hard prison wall separating the prisoners and their desire for each other, and the smoke from a cigarette that connects them. Genet is in love with fragmented objects. Jean Cocteau’s equally brilliant camera feels its way, as tenderly as obsessively, through the flaming source of this paradisiacal hell: arms, hands, toenails, tattoos and facial stubble. There can be no deliverance from this hell, as it is our own.

The scandal of sexual difference is – despite the liberal affirmations made to the contrary since the 1960s – not so easy to dispose of once and for all. The photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, who died of AIDS in 1989, stages his own partially sadomasochistic desires. The 10 exhibition copies (1988) are an assembly of self-portraits and black and white images of transgressive poses with sexual accessories such as whips, which –despite their careful composition – cannot deny their calculated social provocation. The photographs achieve their suspense via the contrast between their dense referencing, their polished, rather classicist language of light and form, and the obscenity of their content. In 1990, one year after Mapplethorpe’s death, an exhibition of seven of his sadomasochistic portraits in Cincinatti under the title The Perfect Moment led to controversy over their presentation. During the exhibition, there was a failed attempt to convict the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center and its director, Dennis Barrie, for exhibiting offensive material. In the year 2000, these events were filmed under the title Dirty Pictures with James Woods playing the role of the museum director.

DIGITAL OBSOLESCENCE by Alana Kakoyiannis

APOTHEKE kicks off its ambitious Fall 2009 exhibitions program with 'DIGITAL OBSOLESCENCE', a cutting-edge installation by Alana Kakoyiannis.

Alana Kakoyianis (www.alanakakoyiannis.com), a par excellence filmmaker, attempts a selective retrospective not of her output but of her medium as materialised technology. Through the process of unearthing and appropriating a found collection of thousands of ex-rental VHS tapes -a cult landmark of the Old Nicosia- Kakoyianis (re)constructs a mount of apocalyptic formations, unreeling prophecies and recollections of technological ghosts and modes of entertainment. The sensual geology of 'DIGITAL OBSOLESCENCE' oozes of references to earthworks, minimalism and performance relics – all structural components of Kakoyiannis' artistic practise. Yet the ironic harmony of this installation's eroding elements narrate a memorial to the ever shifting conventions of time as matter, mimicking and mocking battle cries for the preservation and rehabilitation of not least historical, technological and spatial memory.

Sorry Mrs. Woolf

(Roger Fry, Virginia Woolf, 1928)

"There is nothing mysterious in this process by which form becomes the porter or carrier of internal emotions. It admits of a simple, psychological explanation... it remains possible to say all one wants about arrangements of pure form without ever once using the word beauty and employing always the vocabulary with which one would speak of a man’s character, commonplace... vigorous... empty, etc."

To Hell With Thoreau!*

A mercurochrome agony down the west.

'It is this silence that frightens me - the silence-'
The Consul read this sentence over and over again, the same sentence, the same letter, all of the letters vain as those arriving on shipboard in port for one lost at sea, because he found some difficuly in focusing, the words kept blurring and dissembling, hisown name starting out at him : but the mescal had brought him in touch with his situation again to the extent that he did not now need to comprehend any meaning in the words beyond their abject confirmation of his own lostness, his own fruitless selfish ruin, now perhaps finally self-imposed, his brain, before this cruelly disregarded evidence of what heartbreak he had caused her, at an agonized standstill.

About Time

But the bell rings, and I must get off the track and let the cars go by; —
What's the railroad to me?
I never go to see
Where it ends.
It fills a few hollows,
And makes banks for the swallows,
It sets the sand a-blowing,
And the blackberries a-growing,
but I cross it like a cart-path in the woods. I will not have my eyes put out and my ears spoiled by its smoke and steam and hissing. ("Sounds" Walden)

47.11 - Feeding Mia Farrow

YERVANT DER PARTHOGH: 47.11 - Feeding Mia Farrow

Τον Νοέμβριο θα παρουσιαστεί από την APOTHEKE η βίντεο-εγκτασταση "Around The Silence" ενω ετοιμάζεται και το βιβλίο φωτογραφιών του με τίτλο "Walking Through Rooms And Stopping".

YERVANT DER PARTHOGH: 47.11 - Feeding Mia Farrow
APOTHEKE 13 - 20 JULY 2009

The recent, radical transformation of the technologies of observing and auscultating unfolding events via media such as Youtube and blogging, differentiates the production of collective memory as well as the context and meaning of 'trauma'. A vast archive of private, local, mostly confrontational events defines today's international communality, a communality which in turn is re-privatised and appropriated accordingly. The quest-ion of belonging becomes a query regarding digital memory, the resolution and framing of images, provided the images themselves remain genealogically untraceable. Mia Farrow's recent - failed hunger strike for Darfur from Connecticut , a screaming privatization of an international issue and a shift in its dissemination as of a specific local archive, triggered Yervant Der Parthogh's visit to his own archive of problematically copyrighted filmed conflicts. A visit which immediately becomes aporetic vis-a-vis the role of the viewer-author within the broader process of redistributing parts and permits in such an archive's reconstruction. Bringing together techniques from music videos, war reportage and CCTV surveillance, Yervant Der Parthogh's 47.11 - Feeding Mia Farrow synthesizes a third archive in-between public and private, briefing and alienation, in-between copyright and cultural terrorism. 47.11 -Feeding Mia Farrow thus traces supply lines to nurture the peripeteia of the archive and its uses, supply lines unadulterated by the amassing ravingly anorexic privatizations yet not that far from our domestic t.v. sets.

'47.11 - Feeding Mia Farrow' is the first of a series of visits by Yervant Der Parthogh to archives and data banks. In November APOTHEKE will present his video-installation titled "Around The Silence", while he is also currently working on a photo-book titled "Walking Through Rooms And Stopping" which is to be published in early 2010.

ART IS DIFFICULT - GET OVER IT!

Phileleftheros, Sunday, 5th July 2009, p. 44*

Η διακωμώδηση γίνεται εμφανής μέσα από την επιλογή των τίτλων των φωτογραφιών όπως για παράδειγμα «Where Ι signal you where you go» παρμένο από την κυπριακή φράση, «πού σου νεύκω, πού πάεις» !

Orestis Lambrou: NIC

Continuing his anthropocentric, photographic research into Cyprus' architectural modernism, Orestis Lambrou's exhibition at APOTHEKE, titled NIC, find the artist invading the deserted Nicosia International Airport to photograph this quintessentially symbolic of the island's recent architectural history building. Exposing its design and decorative details, Orestis Lambrou's photographs, avoid the romanticized aesthetic clouding the airport's building and instead focus on its autonomous aesthetics as a build structure.
The photographs at NIC (the IATA code name for the Nicosia International Airport) narrate on one hand the historical traces of abandonment, yet on the other they recount a climactic moment in Cyprus' attempts to formulate an architectural identity beyond local and national influences.

LOVE AT LAST SIGHT

For his first solo exhibition under the title LOVE AT LAST SIGHT, opening on the 19th June 2009 at APOTHEKE, Constantinos Taliotis (b.1983) begins from the end’s beginnings. Scenarios of disaster and situations at the brink of disintegration are photographically charted, narrating multiple endings, thus mocking the obsessive unerstanding of disaster as essentially apocalyptic. Instead of the imminent, grievous flattening an ending is understood to engage in, Constantinos Taliotis rediscovers and manages, at last sight, the discontinuous game of the process of disaster itself. Instead of the ominous consumption of sobs and cries, the echo of a silenced loudspeaker, the rattle of a deserted pool-bar, a bright orange, plastic, toy-gun force the accepted tracing of the warring, the disastrous, the catastrophic to a disorderly retreat.

WAR FEVER

Nicosia is intruded by a ferocious catastrophe in February 2042. The city is deluged by an inexplicably massive quantity of sand from an unidentified source. It is covered in grey sand and dense mist. The city is evacuated and the inhabitants move to the highlands or along the coast. In the moment of this biblical destruction, a conflict, that dates back to the beginning of the century, exacerbates. Two well organized and equipped teams are in war for the aesthetic authority of the city, each one trying to impose its own architectural idiom. On the one hand, the defenders of classic architecture, often found in the walled city, seek to extend their influence outside the walls, while on the other hand the adversaries of classic homogeneity that is imposed on districts of special architectural character, demand the complete liberalization of aesthetic and city planning criteria and constrains. An urban landscape that is threatened by extinction turns to a battlefield where the architectural pluralism and polyphony is in danger.

The Salt Appeal - Buy One Book

Independent Book Lovers Everywhere

The Just One Book Campaign

From Chris Hamilton-Emery:

“As many of you will know, Jen and I have been struggling to keep Salt moving since June last year when the economic downturn began to affect our press. Our three year funding ends this year: we’ve £4,000 due from Arts Council England in a final payment, but cannot apply through Grants for the Arts for further funding for Salt’s operations. Spring sales were down nearly 80% on the previous year, and despite April’s much improved trading, the past twelve months has left us with a budget deficit of over £55,000. It’s proving to be a very big hole and we’re having to take some drastic measures to save our business. Here’s how you can help us to save Salt and all our work with hundreds of authors around the world.

JUST ONE BOOK

1. Please buy just one book, right now. We don’t mind from where, you can buy it from us or from Amazon, your local shop or megastore, online or offline. If you buy just one book now, you’ll help to save Salt. Timing is absolutely everything here. We need cash now to stay afloat. If you love literature, help keep it alive. All it takes is just one book sale. Go to our online store and help us keep going.

2. Share this note on your profile. Tell your friends. If we can spread the word about our cash crisis, we can hopefully find more sales and save our literary publishing. Remember it’s just one book, that’s all it takes to save us. Please do it now.

With my best wishes to everyone

Chris
