ARCHITECTURAL VIEWS: NEOPTOLEMOS MICHAELIDES

ΟΨΕΙΣ ΑΡΧΙΤΕΚΤΟΝΙΚΗΣ: ΝΕΟΠΤΟΛΕΜΟΣ ΜΙΧΑΗΛΙΔΗΣ

Μια διαφορετική όψη της Κυπριακής αρχιτεκτονικής, προβάλλει μέσα από την έκδοση «Όψεις Αρχιτεκτονικής: Νεοπτόλεμος Μιχαηλίδης», του Ορέστη Λάμπρου. Η έκδοση συγκεντρώνει μια σειρά από φωτογραφικές αποτυπώσεις έργων του σημαντικού Κύπριου αρχιτέκτονα, όπως αυτά είναι σήμερα.
Σε ειδική εκδήλωση η έκδοση / λεύκωμα θα παρουσιαστεί την Πέμπτη 17 Δεκεμβρίου, στο ισόγειο της Πολυκατοικίας Δημητρίου, ενός από τα ευρέως γνωστά έργα του Νεοπτόλεμου Μιχαηλίδη έργο που πρόκειται σύντομα να ανακαινιστεί. Παράλληλα, στο χώρο θα παρουσιάζεται έκθεση φωτογραφίας με έργα από το βιβλίο. Η έκδοση θα διατίθεται σε ειδική τιμή κατά τη διάρκεια της έκθεσης, ενώ θα υπάρχει επίσης ειδική έκδοση με 3 φωτογραφίες.
Χρησιμοποιώντας το φωτογραφικό φακό όχι μόνο για να καταγράψει τη λιτότητα των γραμμών, τις απλές φόρμες και την ευρεία χρήση του μπετόν που χαρακτηρίζουν το έργο του Κύπριου αρχιτέκτονα, αλλά και για να εστιάσει στη σημασία που έχουν αυτά τα έργα ως μέρος του ζωντανού κτιστού περιβάλλοντος, ο Ορέστης Λάμπρου αναφέρει: «Από σεβασμό στο έργο του αρχιτέκτονα αλλά και ως φόρο τιμής στο μοντερνισμό θεώρησα σημαντικό να εστιάσω την προσοχή τόσο σ’ αυτά τα κτήρια όσο και στη σημασία της αρχιτεκτονικής που μας περιβάλλει».
Το έργο του Νεοπτόλεμου Μιχαηλίδη, ξεχωριστό για την ιδιότυπη και ουσιαστική εφαρμογή των αρχών του Μοντερνισμού στο Κυπριακό πλαίσιο, αποτελεί κεντρικό αντικείμενο, βασικό ερέθισμα και σημείο εκκίνησης για την φωτογραφική εργασία του Ορέστη Λάμπρου ο οποίος αναφέρει σχετικά: «Οι προφανείς μετατροπές που υπόκεινται τα κτήρια, η αλλαγές στη χρήση τους ή ακόμη η αχρησία τους είναι εξίσου σημαντικό να καταγραφούν όπως και οι εικόνες τους. Αξιοποιώντας τις αρχειακές ιδιότητες του βιβλίου, τις δυνατότητες διατήρησης που προσφέρει και τις αφηγηματικές του αξίες, προσπάθησα να καταγράψω τη συνεισφορά του Μιχαηλίδη στο μοντερνισμό της Κυπριακής αρχιτεκτονικής αυτής της εποχής. Μιας εποχής της οποίας τα κτήρια διαγράφονται σιγά-σιγά από την ιστορία της αρχιτεκτονικής και κατεδαφίζονται για να παραχωρήσουν τη θέση τους σε νέα κτίσματα.»

Ορέστης Λάμπρου
Ο Ορέστης Λάμπρου (1981) σπούδασε κινηματογράφο (BA Hons) στο UCCA, εικόνα και επικοινωνία (MA) στο Goldsmiths University. To 2006 σκηνοθέτησε την ταινία “Urban Nomad”. Συμμετείχε στην ομαδική έκθεση “IC Show” (2008) στο Bardgehouse Gallery στο Λονδίνο. Ενδιαφέροντά του, η ανθρωποκεντρική μελέτη της μοντέρνας αρχιτεκτονικής ιδιαίτερα στα πλαίσια της Κυπριακής αρχιτεκτονικής ταυτότητάς. Τον περασμένο Ιούλιο παρουσίασε στην APOTHEKE έκθεση με φωτογραφίες από το Αεροδρόμιο Λευκωσίας με τίτλο NIC. Ζει και εργάζεται στο Λονδίνο και την Λευκωσία.

ARCHITECTURAL VIEWS: NEOPTOLEMOS MICHAELIDES

A different aspect on Cyprus architecture is presented with the publication of "Architectural Views: Neoptolemos Michaelides”, by Orestis Lambrou. The book brings together a series of photographic impressions of selected buildings of the Cypriot architect, as those stand today.
The book will be launched on Thursday, December 17th, on the ground floor of the Demetriou Tower in Nicosia. The Demetriou Tower is one of the more widely known works of Neoptolemos Michaelides and it is soon to be renovated. In addition to the book, there will be a photography exhibition with selected prints from the book. The book will be available at a promotional price during the exhibition, while it will also be available for purchase, as a special edition that includes 3 prints.
Utilizing the camera not only to record the simplicity of lines, simple forms and the widespread use of concrete that characterizes the work of the Cypriot architect, but also to focus on the importance of these projects as part of our living built environment, Orestis Lambrou says, "Out of respect for the architect’s work, and as homage to modernist design, I find it important to draw attention to these buildings as well as to the importance of the architecture that surrounds us.”
The work of Neoptolemos Michaelides, special in its unique and effective implementation of the principles of Modernism in a Cypriot context, is a key stimulus and starting point for the photographic work of Orestis Lambrou who says, "The evident changes that buildings endure, the evolution in their use or even non-use, are as important to record as their images. Through the book’s conservational and archival qualities, and through the medium’s narrative values, I attempted an account of Michaelides’ contribution to the modern era of Cypriot architecture. Especially since the representative buildings of this era are slowly being erased from the time line of architectural history and demolished to give space to new constructions.”


Orestis Lambrou
Orestis Lambrou (1981) studied Film (BA Hons) at UCCA, Image and Communication (MA) at Goldsmiths University. In 2006 he directed the film "Urban Nomad". He participated in the group exhibition "IC Show" (2008) at the Bardgehouse Gallery in London. He is a film maker and a photographer whose interest is documenting urban spaces from an anthropocentric point of view and particularly within the Cypriot architectural identity. Through his work, both still and durational, he attempts to bring forth what is otherwise missed. In July at APOTHEKE in Nicosia, he presented a solo exhibition of photographs from the abandoned Nicosia Airport entitled NIC. He lives and works in London and Nicosia.
